By Christopher Toomey I've recently been told that being Green is the cool thing to do. So, knowing that, I am really trying to be 'greener' in the yard this year. Organic lawn serivce, organic insect control etc. and I thought, ok, lets surround the house with an organic 'barrier' to keep bugs out #instead of the usual pest company#. I noticed two large black ant colonies, one near the edge of the woods and another close to the house. I also noticed a tiny sugar ant colony in the walkway. With a menacing grin, I sprikled this stuff over both areas. Waited two days. Results? Ants were just fine. I grabbed the bag and said, "ok, suck on this" and literally DUMPED this stuff over the colonies. That should do it. NOT! (yep, used not right there). Went back out today (about 3 days later) and the colonies have actually gotten bigger. (I also think I saw an ant with a computer, making me think this stuff has potentially made them smarter). To recap: Pros: Nice bag. Has a kid and a dog on it which is nice. Smells great and indeed made me feel cool when I put it in my cart at Home Depot. Cons: Turns ants into smarter, faster breeding machines with an undying determination to take over your yard. (And perhaps steal your wife and car). Overall: Clearly they are making this from the leftovers at a spice factory. Peanuts and ineffective By Wix For anyone reading this that has a child with nut allergies please be aware that my smaller package stated that it contained peanut hulls. Now perhaps some parents are in that comfort zone but with my DD's allergies I certainly am NOT seeing how she reacts to airborne peanut particles. I also found these to scatter too easily to become effective, require WAY too heavy an application to make them economic (2 foot swath? are you kidding?) and they are so light the wind can blow them away. My solution was to use Woodstream Poison Free ant and roach killer which kills on contact. These did not. The reason is simple. The mint oil is not drenched into the hulls enough to provide an instant kill. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Works great on Fire Ants and Chinch Bugs By nan Works great! Home Depot sells Ecosmart products. We use to use Best Yet (has a strong cedar smell and at 29.00 a bottle was too expensive) but Ecosmart is a lot cheaper and works just as good if not better. It is safe around children and pets that is why we tried it. We also use the Ecosmart spray outside, in the garage and on the porch only. When you spray a bee with Ecosmart it's died the moment the spray hits it. JUST DON'T SPRAY IT INSIDE or you will have to leave your house for a while. Has a strong cinnamon smell. It smells great outside. We also use the Ecosmart granules for lawns for fire ants and chinch bugs. Works great and it's pet friendly. Also organic which means a lot to me. I personally don't mind the smell it's a strong cinnamon smell, if you use the spray inside just don't spray too much. It's like a strong air freshener. With the granules if you use them for fire ants you have to put 2 applications and the ants are gone and never return. It rained after so I don't know if that helped the problem but they are gone.
